Effective, Non-Invasive Treatment

Sclerotherapy promotion for spider vein treatment.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Available to patients from Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg, and Greater Florida, liquid sclerotherapy and foam sclerotherapy are effective, non-invasive treatments for spider veins. During a sclerotherapy session, tiny injections are made into the vein causing the unsightly and no longer functional vessels to contract and collapse.

Patients generally experience a 40 percent improvement in the appearance of spider veins after each sclerotherapy treatment. Depending on the patient’s condition and desired results, between two and six sclerotherapy sessions (each typically less than thirty minutes) are needed to achieve optimum results. At the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we use both foam sclerotherapy and liquid sclerotherapy techniques for treatment, depending upon your individual needs.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins, also known as telagiectasias, are small thin vessels that lie close to the surface of the skin. Found in millions of adults across the country, this common condition is one of the many vascular disorders that our vein specialist Jeffrey A. Hunt D.O., R.V.S., R.V.P.I. can correct.

Although these superfine veins are connected with the larger venous system, they are not an essential part of it. Spider Veins have three patterns:

  • Spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a dark central point
  • Arborizing which resemble tiny branch-like shapes
  • Linear which appear in thin separate lines

Causes of Spider Veins

Spider veins are commonly found on the legs and face and may be spider-shaped, branch-shaped, or appear as thin, short jagged lines. As people age, more leg veins seem to appear. The three primary causes of spider veins are:

  • Heredity: If other people in your family suffer from spider veins, you are more likely to develop them over time as well.
  • Pregnancy: During pregnancy, hormonal shifts often cause poor blood circulation, leading to spider vein growth.
  • Prolonged sitting or standing: If your occupation or lifestyle entails standing up or sitting down for long periods of time, then increased venous pressure may cause spider veins.

Other less common causes of spider veins include excess sun exposure, chronic constipation, certain medications and birth control pills, weight gain, and wearing high-heeled shoes or tight clothing.

Advanced Combination Treatment For Spider Veins For Legs, Face & Body

At The Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we constantly strive to offer our patients the most advanced treatments available. We are pleased to announce a new combination therapy for spider veins that is highly effective in providing cosmetic treatment for the unwanted aesthetic effects of spider veins. Our innovative combination therapy for spider veins utilizes sclerotherapy along with a personalized regimen of laser treatment, which may include the 940 Diode laser or a long pulse Yag laser.

The 940 Diode laser is designed to treat stubborn red refractory vessels. Patients who have been previously told that there was no treatment available for red discolored veins can benefit from this laser. We sometimes need to inject the vessel and then immediately laser it for complete removal. This is the laser that we have found to be the best for treating leg vessels. We also have several additional lasers and Intense Pulsed Light to address facial vessels. The long pulse Yag laser is effective in treating blue subdermal veins. Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical treatment that is established as an effective way to treat spider veins. Dr. Hunt and his team are highly experienced in sclerotherapy as well as a range of laser treatments. By using a customized combination of these modalities, we are able to achieve a more significant closure of the cosmetic vessels and help patients realize their aesthetic goals with effective spider vein removal.
