What Is Sofwave™?
Sofwave™ is the newest skin-tightening treatment that uses Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam (SUPERB™) technology. SUPERB™ is a form of ultrasound energy that heats the skin at specific depths to stimulate the gradual production of collagen and elastin and subsequent skin tightening.
Sofwave™ was initially FDA-approved in 2019 for wrinkle reduction and in 2021 for skin tightening. The treatment is also clinically proven to improve the appearance of the skin, with results visible as early as one week after a single treatment. The results from Sofwave™ gradually improve over two to three months. The final results can last for a long time, about one to two years.
How does Sofwave™ Work?
Sofwave™ works by heating the skin to specific temperatures and at a specific depth to trigger neocollagenesis and neoelastinogenesis (collagen and elastin production).
To achieve this, Sofwave™ uses SUPERB™ technology. This unique technology delivers parallel beams of ultrasound energy to the skin at a depth of 1.5mm, which is the location of the mid-dermis. This creates column-shaped treated zones that are separated by areas of untreated tissue. The treated zones heat up to 140-158°F (60-70°C), which injures the skin and causes an inflammatory response. The untreated thermal zones help promote faster neocollagenesis and neoelastinogenesis, leading to visible improvement in the skin. To protect the top layer of the skin, Sofwave™ comes with an integrated cooling system called Sofcool™. Sofcool™ prevents excessive heating of the top layer of the skin during treatment, which reduces recovery times and makes this treatment more suitable for a wider range of skin tones and types.
What does Sofwave™ treat?
Sofwave™ is clinically proven to restore collagen in the skin. Loss of collagen leads to an array of skin concerns, most notably skin laxity and wrinkles. That’s why we use Sofwave™ to address common signs of aging caused by diminished collagen production:

What makes Sofwave™ different?
Sofwave™ uses proprietary SUPERB™ and Sofcool™ technology, which offers greater treatment precision, improved efficiency and less discomfort than many other energy-based rejuvenation treatments.
This technology generates fractionated high-intensity, high-frequency ultrasonic pulses, which are delivered parallel at a depth of only 1.5 mm. At this level and in this manner, there is little to no risk of injury to muscles, fat or nerves. Its cooling technology further reduces any chance of injury to the skin’s topmost layer. In other words, energy is directed with ultra-high precision to layers of the skin that triggers collagen production with minimal damage. In comparison, other ultrasound and light-based treatments are less precise and can lead to unwanted side effects, significant discomfort and long recovery times.
The Treatment
We begin this treatment by first cleansing the skin and then applying a numbing cream. Once the treatment area feels numb, after 30 minutes to an hour, your provider removes residues from the numbing cream and applies ultrasound gel. Your provider presses a handheld device against your skin for 30 seconds at a time before moving to the next section of the skin. Most patients require two passes for the best results.
Your skin may feel warm during treatment, and you may also notice mild pinching at the end of each 30-second interval. Any discomfort you may feel should be minimal and short. The whole treatment takes about 45 minutes to an hour from start to finish. Pro-Nox™ nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available as an option.

The Results
One of the best things about Sofwave™ is that it creates near-instant results. Known as the Sofwave™ “glow,” patients notice radiant and tight skin as soon as they leave our office. Your skin may also feel mildly hot and swollen right after treatment.
As your skin gradually heals, you will notice significant tightening and improvement in wrinkles. This usually takes place about a week after treatment. As your skin continues to produce more collagen and elastin over the next two to three months, you will notice a greater improvement in your skin’s appearance, which should last for up to two years.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sofwave™ is generally safe, with few reported side effects. When side effects occur, they are usually mild and include things like redness, swelling and pain. Very rarely, patients may experience bruising, ulcers and hyperpigmentation.
Sofwave™ may only cause mild discomfort, both during and after treatment. This may include feelings of warmth and pinching. To keep you comfortable during treatment, we may apply a topical numbing agent or offer Pro-Nox™ nitrous oxide (laughing gas).
The ideal Sofwave™ candidate is in their 30s to 60s and experiencing mild to moderate signs of aging, like wrinkles and skin laxity. Patients should not have active skin infections or open wounds.
Nearly all patients benefit from one treatment session, which takes 45 minutes to complete, with the additional time needed for treatment preparation.
Your results will be visible about a week after treatment, which is how long it takes for your skin to produce new collagen and elastic fibers. The full effect of this treatment takes two to three months to show.
Your Sofwave™ results should last for at least a year and up to two years with good skincare and healthy lifestyle habits.
