Lumenis IPL® Work
Lumenis IPL (intense pulsed light) utilizes light energy to gently heat the skin in order to encourage it to shed unwanted skin cells. IPL can be very successful in correcting skin discolorations, including red or brown patches of skin due to rosacea, sun damage, or hyperpigmentation. IPL differs from other lasers because it offers a range of wavelengths, as opposed to just one. Patients seeking skin rejuvenation love IPL because it offers a quick, effective treatment with little to no downtime.

What to expect during
IPL® Treatment
IPL treatments typically begin with the application of a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort during treatment. These treatments are highly customizable to specifically address your needs and goals. We will adjust equipment settings and the length of your session for your personalized treatment plan. Multiple wavelengths of light are emitted in a series of gentle pulses over a targeted area. This allows the light to penetrate through different levels of the skin to comprehensively correct abnormally dilated vessels, stimulate collagen, and reduce hyperpigmentation. In certain cases, multiple treatment sessions may be recommended to achieve the greatest degree of skin rejuvenation. Treatment Instructions
- Women who are pregnant or nursing an infant are not candidates for IPL®
- Due to photosensitivity precautions, skin rejuvenation products containing glycolic acid, retinols, or Retin-A® should be stopped two days prior to treatment.
- The less sun exposure patients have, the better their treatment will be. Patients who must be in the sun need to use sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater protection.
- DO NOT scrub the treated area with anything abrasive for at least two days after treatment.
- Wear sunscreen daily and apply chilled aloe vera gel as needed.
- DO NOT use self-tanners for two weeks before treatment.
IPL® Recovery
Following treatment, skin may become flushed and warm, like a mild sunburn, though the intensity of your treatment and skin type will dictate your unique response. Typically these reactions can be treated with cold compresses, and they tend to resolve quickly. Patients often resume full activities, including return to work, as soon as the procedure is completed. The number of treatments required to achieve the full effect varies depending on the size, location, depth, and color of the cosmetic concerns. Minimal downtime is one of the many benefits of photofacial treatment.
Results with IPL®
Initial results of treatment appear soon after the skin repairs itself and continue to improve as new collagen and elastin are produced in the months after treatment. Patients who undergo IPL® treatment often choose to combine it with cosmetic injectables like BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers to further diminish wrinkles and restore youthful facial volume.
