Tear Trough Correction with Hyaluronic Acid Under Eye Filler

The delicate area under the eyes is often one of the first places to show visible signs of aging, with a sunken appearance from under eye hollowing, dark circles, and heavy bags that result in a prematurely aged or fatigued appearance. At The Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay Tear Trough Filler treatments are provided by our rejuvenation specialists using Restylane, Juvederm, or Vollure to refresh and smooth the under-eye area without the need for cosmetic surgery.

What Is a Tear Trough?

The tear trough, also known as the nasojugal groove, is the area that begins under the inner corner of the eye and extends from the inner corner toward the cheekbone or palpebromalar groove. In our youth, this area between the eye, cheek, and nose is typically smooth and unnoticeable. However, as we age our skin loses elasticity and fatty tissue decreases, causing the tear trough to deepen. A deep tear trough can create a hollow underneath the eye, which causes or accentuates dark circles and puffiness that add years to the face. While often a sign of aging, younger patients can also have tear trough deformities that cause a harsh crease between the eye area and the midface.

How does Tear Trough Filler Work?

Traditionally, the only effective and long-term remedy for tear troughs was lower eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty. Luckily, there is a simple and non-surgical option for men and women who would like to improve tear troughs for a well-rested and youthful look.

By utilizing injectables composed of hyaluronic acid filler to add volume to the eye trough, we can smooth the area to correct a sunken look and diminish the appearance of shadows and eye bags. When doing Tear Trough fillers Tampa Bay injectors at our office carefully place dermal fillers—typically Restylane®, Juvederm® or Vollure—in the tear trough during a cosmetic procedure designed to correct volume loss and pigmentation issues in the under-eye area. This quick and noninvasive treatment provides a dramatic enhancement to the eyes and long-term results with little to no downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know that the thought of an injection near your eye can be intimidating, but patients typically do not find this procedure to be painful. A topical numbing product will be applied at the injection site prior to treatment to ensure your comfort. Also, when treating tear troughs and the orbital rim, we utilize a needleless technique using a cannula to minimize bruising and discomfort.

The most common side effects for tear trough filler are mild tenderness, swelling and bruising at the injection site, but these symptoms are normal and should dissipate within several hours.

We offer a variety of dermal filler options, but our specialists agree that Restylane® or another HA filler is typically the best choice for tear trough treatment.* Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance that binds to water in the body in order to smooth and add volume. The results are natural looking and effective. While results can be long-lasting, hyaluronic acid is also easily dissolved so a procedure can be reversed if needed. Also, what is possibly even more important than filler choice is filler location. Our experienced filler specialists are careful to stay deep under the orbicularis oculi muscle to avoid Tyndall effect or lymphedema.

Patients may experience mild bruising and swelling that will typically resolve within a week, although our advanced approach utilizing a needleless filler cannula technique can minimize bruising by 80%. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 24 hours and patients should wait a week before undergoing any other facial treatments. Otherwise, patients often resume normal activities right after treatment.
